This is a mobile phone shot of car light trails cast on the streets of Whitehaven, close to the towns 500-year-old* historic port. This is my first attempt at painting light trails onto a photo, and I’m incredibly pleased at the outcome. I hope you like it.

• Light painting is an imaging technique that uses a moving light source to add light to an under-illuminated subject while taking a long-exposure photograph.
• My photo was captured, with an exposure of 126 seconds.

The streets of Whitehaven were wet last night following rain, which aided in the production of this photo – the reflecting glossy streets added to the overall atmosphere.

*The existence of a harbour or landing place at Whitehaven can be traced back to the early 16th century when quay-dues – otherwise known as wharfage – were recorded in 1517.
